Mohammed Salli sits in his shop on Rue Mechatine in Fes’ old medina, a street named for the comb-makers (mechatine) that once lined the street. Today, Salli is the last of those traditional comb-makers left in Fes. The combs are made from cow and sheep horns which he buys from Dar Dbagh Chauara, the older tannery in the city.
Salli laments the loss of the other carvers and of his own business. “What honor is there in being a museum?” he asks as he sits alone in his shop, whittling a piece of bull horn into a hairpin. April, 2019.

The workshop, which had 26 participants between the ages of 19 and 62, was held from June 4 to June 10, 2017. The workshop’s goal was one of capacity building within the local artisan community - specifically teaching them to use new techniques and to make and market a wider range of products.
